2017: Our Year of Adventure

Last year, right before the New Year began I made my word for 2017 adventure. I promised myself to try new things, see new places, be more spontaneous and overall sit back and enjoy the ride of life- because I truly believe it in itself is one big adventure.

This year was a bigger adventure than I ever could have imagined, and writing this now as I look back I can honestly say I’m in awe of everything we got to see, do, and accomplish throughout the year.

2017 started with a two week road trip, starting in Chicago, stopping in Jackson, Wyoming for a week and then driving all the way through Utah visiting family before heading to Arizona to see Horseshoe Bend and heading home to Texas. Overall we drove 60 hours, through seven states, and over 3,200 miles. It was the greatest adventure to kick off the New Year with.

We spent weeks at home, finally finishing the remodel of our Texas home- installing new windows and gutters, reinstalling the whole staircase, and repainting the whole house before spending down time together.

We had the opportunity to visit the Dominican Republic in February with the Chicago Bears, where we swam with Nurse Sharks and spent countless hours by the pool and visited Mexico for our first ever couple's vacation!

In April we found out we were expecting!

For our 4th anniversary Pat got me on a flight to Hawaii that I was always too scared to take. We stood silently in honor at Pearl Harbor, swam with spinner dolphins, hiked up to the most amazing views overlooking the ocean, watched the sunrise as we sat on the beach and sipped on our morning coffee, and found ourselves in 3,000 feet deep of water in the Pacific Ocean trying to keep up with a manta ray- what a way to swim for the first time in the Pacific Ocean. I’ll never forget jumping off that boat into the wide open sea shortly after  the manta ray had swam by.

It was another year living the dream we worked so hard for, and although things weren’t how we would have wanted, I was able to watch Patrick out on the field in a jersey I’m so proud to watch him represent, with our name on the back of his jersey- for a few short games. I’ve watched him in some of the most painful days throughout this recovery be positive, and almost four months later, I’m proud to say we’re closer to returning to the field every day.

But in all that we’ve seen, experienced, and accomplished. In all the new things we’ve done in 2017, I think it’s safe to say our favorite of all, is you.

The light of our world joined us earlier this month, and while we’ve taken the past few weeks to spend this quality time with her and embrace this time by ourselves we are excited to finally share her with you. She is the best of our 2017, and even though the year of adventure is over, our adventure with her is just beginning, and we couldn’t be more excited.

We were blessed by one of the happiest years we've ever had in 2017. We thank God every single day for every opportunity we've been given in this year, for all of the people who supported, prayed and loved us.

2017 will always be a memorable year for me because it was a year I finally feel like I stayed true to myself. I tried some new things, put myself out there, looking back can honestly say I recognized myself throughout the whole year as the silly, fun-going Brandie I am working so hard to get back to.

We are so excited for 2018, and we cannot wait to see what the year holds. I hope you are spending the night reflecting on all of the good in 2017, and that your 2018 is everything you work hard to make it. I pray everyone has a safe, healthy, cheerful, and successful 2018.

With love,

The Scales
